Espostoa melanostele was already described and the name validly published by Friedrich Karl Johann Vaupel. It was John Borg, however, who reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics .

Espostoa melanostele is a species in the genus Espostoa which contains approximately 14 to 19 species and belongs to the family of the Cactaceae (Cactus Family). The type species of the genus is Espostoa lanata.
