Rosa woodsii var. gratissima was already described and the name validly published by Edward Lee Greene. It was not until 1956, however, that John Rufus Cole reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Rosa woodsii var. gratissima is a variety in the genus Rosa (rose) which contains 149 species and belongs to the family of the Rosaceae (Rose Family).

The subshrubs grow to a height of approximately 1,5 meters.
