Rosa virginiana var. lamprophylla was already described and the name validly published by Per Axel Rydberg. It was not until 1922, however, that Merritt Lyndon Fernald reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Rosa virginiana var. lamprophylla is a variety in the genus Rosa (rose) which contains 149 species and belongs to the family of the Rosaceae (Rose Family).

The subshrubs grow to a height of approximately 1,2 meters.

Rosa virginiana var. lamprophylla is a decidious plant with imparipinnate leaves. The leaves are arranged opposite one another. They are mid green and obovate.

The flowers are five-petaled. The plants bloom from June to August. The flowers are arranged in corymbs.
The red fruits are hips.
