Rosa villosa was described in 1753 by Carl Linnaeus. The name is considered as validly published.

The Apple Rose is a species in the genus Rosa (rose) which contains 149 species and belongs to the family of the Rosaceae (Rose Family).

The shrubs grow to a height of approximately 1,8 meters.

Rosa villosa is a decidious plant with imparipinnate leaves. The leaves are arranged opposite one another. They are obovate with serrate margins.

The flowers are five-petaled and pink. The plants bloom from June to July. The flowers are arranged in corymbs.
The red fruits are hips and very ornamental.

Rosa villosa is native to France, the Apennine Peninsula, the Balkan Peninsula, Central and eastern Central Europe, Eastern Europe, Turkey, the Caucasus, Iran and Central Asia and is naturalized in Northern Europe.

The Apple Rose prefers a sunny to half shady site and can withstand temperatures down to -28,2º C. It grows best in sandy or pebbly, loamy soil that is dry to moderately moist.
