Rosa subcanina was already described and the name validly published by Hanne Christensen. It was not until 1891, however, that Karl Wilhelm von Dalla Torre and Ludwig von Sarnthein reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Rosa subcanina is a species in the genus Rosa (rose) which contains 149 species and belongs to the family of the Rosaceae (Rose Family).

The shrubs grow to a height of approximately 2 meters.

Rosa subcanina is a decidious plant with imparipinnate leaves. The leaves are arranged opposite one another. They are dark green and ovate with serrate margins.

The flowers are five-petaled and pink. The plants bloom from June to July. The flowers are arranged in corymbs.
The red fruits are hips.

Rosa subcanina is native to the whole of Europe with the exception of the Iberian Peninsula, as well as to West Asia.

Rosa subcanina prefers a sunny to half shady site. It grows best in sandy or pebbly, loamy soil that is dry to moderately moist.
