Rosa spithamea var. sonomensis was already described and the name validly published by Edward Lee Greene. It was not until 1901, however, that Willis Linn Jepson reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Rosa spithamea var. sonomensis is a variety in the genus Rosa (rose) which contains 149 species and belongs to the family of the Rosaceae (Rose Family).
