Rosa nutkana var. muriculata was already described and the name validly published by Edward Lee Greene. It was not until 1935, however, that George Neville Jones reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Rosa nutkana var. muriculata is a variety in the genus Rosa (rose) which contains 149 species and belongs to the family of the Rosaceae (Rose Family).

The subshrubs grow to a height of approximately 2 meters.
