Rosa moschata was described in 1762 by Julián Camara Hernández. The name is considered as validly published.

The Musk Rose is a species in the genus Rosa (rose) which contains 149 species and belongs to the family of the Rosaceae (Rose Family).

The shrubs grow to a height of approximately 3 meters.

Rosa moschata is an evergreen plant with imparipinnate leaves. The leaves are arranged opposite one another. They are dark green and ovate.

The scented flowers are five-petaled and white. The plants bloom from April to July. They are arranged in corymbs.

The orange fruits are hips.

Rosa moschata is native to Ethiopia and the Himalaya and is naturalized in Southern Europe and the South of the US.

The Musk Rose prefers a sunny to half shady site and can withstand temperatures down to -17,7º C. It grows best in sandy or pebbly, loamy soil that is dry to moderately moist.
