Rosa montana was already described by Dominique Chaix but it was not until 1786 that the name was validly published by Domínique Villars.

Rosa montana is a species in the genus Rosa (rose) which contains 149 species and belongs to the family of the Rosaceae (Rose Family).

The shrubs grow to a height of approximately 2 meters.

Rosa montana is a decidious plant with imparipinnate leaves. The leaves are arranged opposite one another. They are ovate with toothed margins.

The flowers are five-petaled and white. The plants bloom from June to July. The flowers are arranged in corymbs.

The fruits are hips.

Rosa montana is native to the mountain regions of Southern Europe, Southcentral Europe and North Africa.

Rosa montana prefers a sunny to half shady site. It grows best in sandy or pebbly, loamy soil that is dry to moderately moist.
