Rosa missourensis was already described by gardeners but it was not until 1841 that the name was validly published by Ernst Gottlieb von Steudel.

Rosa missourensis is a species in the genus Rosa (rose) which contains 149 species and belongs to the family of the Rosaceae (Rose Family).
