Rosa laevigata was described in 1803 by André Michaux. The name is considered as validly published.

The Cherokee Rose is a species in the genus Rosa (rose) which contains 149 species and belongs to the family of the Rosaceae (Rose Family).

The climbers grow to a height of approximately 5 meters.

Rosa laevigata is an evergreen plant with imparipinnate leaves. The leaves are arranged opposite one another. They are dark green and ovate with serrate margins.

The scented flowers are five-petaled and white. The plants bloom from April to June. They are arranged solitary.

The purple fruits are hips. They develop in summer.

Rosa laevigata is native to China, Taiwan and is naturalized in the Southeast of the US.

The Cherokee Rose prefers a sunny to half shady site and can withstand temperatures down to -17,7º C. It grows best in sandy or pebbly, loamy soil that is dry to moderately moist.
