Rosa horrida was described in 1812 by Friedrich Ernst Ludwig von Fischer. The name is considered as validly published.

Rosa horrida is a species in the genus Rosa (rose) which contains 149 species and belongs to the family of the Rosaceae (Rose Family).

The shrubs grow to a height of approximately 2 meters.

Rosa horrida has imparipinnate leaves. The leaves are arranged opposite one another. They are obovate with serrate margins.
