Rosa acicularis var. nipponensis was already described and the name validly published by François Crépin. It was not until 1893, however, that Bernhard Adalbert Emil Koehne reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Rosa acicularis var. nipponensis is a variety in the genus Rosa (rose) which contains 149 species and belongs to the family of the Rosaceae (Rose Family).

The shrubs grow to a height of approximately 3 meters.

Rosa acicularis var. nipponensis is a decidious plant with imparipinnate leaves. The leaves are arranged opposite one another. They are elliptic with serrate margins.

The flowers are five-petaled and pink. The plants bloom from June to July. The flowers are arranged solitary.
The red fruits are hips. They develop in summer.

Rosa acicularis var. nipponensis is native to Japan.

Rosa acicularis var. nipponensis prefers a sunny to half shady site and can withstand temperatures down to -45,5º C. It grows best in sandy or pebbly, loamy soil that is dry to moderately moist.
