Luzula luzulina is a grass.

Naming

Luzula luzulina was already described and the name validly published by Domínique Villars. It was Marjan Raciborski, however, who reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics .

Taxonomy

Luzula luzulina is a species in the genus Luzula which contains approximately 171 to 175 species and belongs to the family of the Juncaceae (Rush Family).

Growth

The grasses reach heights of 10 to 30 centimetres.

Leaves

Luzula luzulina is evergreen. The green, simple leaves are alternate. They are linear with ciliate margins and parallel venation.

Flowers and Fruits

Luzula luzulina produces solitary brown six-stellate flowers from June to July.

The grasses produce loculicidal capsules.

Distribution

Luzula luzulina is native to to mountain regions in the whole of Europe with the exception of North Europe and the British Isles.

Cultivation

The grasses prefer a half-shady to shady situation on moist soil. The substrate should be sandy-loamy or gritty-loamy soil. They tolerate temperatures down to -23°C (USDA zone 6).
