Euphorbia characias, commonly known as Large Mediterranean Spurge, is a perennial whose long flowering period and relatively easy maintenance make it a valuable ornamental. The variety was described by Carl Linnaeus. The name is considered as validly published. The scientific name, borrowed from ancient Greek chárax (fencing pole) refers to a traditional usage of these perennials.
