Drynaria quercifolia was already described and the name validly published by Carl Linnaeus. It was not until 1841, however, that John Smith reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

The Squirrel Head is a species in the genus Drynaria which contains 19 species and belongs to the family of the Polypodiaceae (Polypody Family).
