Draba petrophila var. viridis was already described and the name validly published by Amos Arthur Heller. It was not until 1941, however, that Charles Leo Hitchcock reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Draba petrophila var. viridis is a variety in the genus Draba (whitlow grass) which contains 300 species and belongs to the family of the Brassicaceae (Mustard Family).
