Draba lonchocarpa var. thompsonii was already described and the name validly published by Charles Leo Hitchcock. It was not until 1953, however, that Reed Clark Rollins reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Draba lonchocarpa var. thompsonii is a variety in the genus Draba (whitlow grass) which contains 300 species and belongs to the family of the Brassicaceae (Mustard Family).

The perennials grow to a height of approximately 0,11 meters and develop as mats.

Draba lonchocarpa var. thompsonii is an evergreen plant with simple leaves. The leaves are arranged in rosettes. They are obovate with entire margins.

The flowers are cross-shaped and white. The plants bloom from June to July. The flowers are arranged in racemes.

Draba lonchocarpa var. thompsonii is native to Sibiria, Alaska, western Canada, the Northwest of the US, the Rocky Mountains and California.
