Draba helleriana var. patens was already described and the name validly published by Amos Arthur Heller. It was not until 1927, however, that Otto Eugen Schulz reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Draba helleriana var. patens is a variety in the genus Draba (whitlow grass) which contains 300 species and belongs to the family of the Brassicaceae (Mustard Family).

The perennials grow to a height of approximately 0,45 meters.
