Draba californica was already described and the name validly published by Willis Linn Jepson. It was not until 1988, however, that Reed Clark Rollins and Robert A. Price reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Draba californica is a species in the genus Draba (whitlow grass) which contains 300 species and belongs to the family of the Brassicaceae (Mustard Family).

The perennials grow to a height of approximately 0,1 meters and develop into mounds or cushions.

Draba californica is an evergreen plant with simple leaves. The leaves are arranged in rosettes. They are oblanceolate with entire margins.
