Draba asprella var. zionensis was already described and the name validly published by Charles Leo Hitchcock. It was not until 1977, however, that Stanley Larson Welsh and James Lauritz Reveal reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Draba asprella var. zionensis is a variety in the genus Draba (whitlow grass) which contains 300 species and belongs to the family of the Brassicaceae (Mustard Family).

The perennials grow to a height of approximately 0,15 meters and develop into mounds or cushions.
