Dianthus knappii was already described and the name validly published by Jószef Pantocsek. It was not until 1877, however, that Vincze von Borbás reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics based on a prior description by Paul Friedrich August Ascherson and August Kanitz.

Dianthus knappii is a species in the genus Dianthus (carnation) which contains 300 species and belongs to the family of the Caryophyllaceae (Pink Family).
