Dendrobium aphyllum is a perennial.

Naming

Dendrobium aphyllum was already described and the name validly published by William Roxburgh. It was Cecil Ernest Claude Fischer, however, who reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics .

Taxonomy

Dendrobium aphyllum is a species in the genus Dendrobium which contains approximately 1266 to 1350 species and belongs to the family of the Orchidaceae (Orchid Family). The type species of the genus is Dendrobium moniliforme.

Growth

The perennials reach heights of 80 to 100 centimetres.

Dendrobium aphyllum is deciduous. The simple leaves are alternate. They are lanceolate with entire margins.

Dendrobium aphyllum produces racemes of light-purple orchid-shaped flowers from March to May.

Distribution

Dendrobium aphyllum is native to Northeast India, the Himalaya, Southwest China, Indochina and the Malay Peninsula. It is a protected species according to the Washington Convention.

Cultivation

The perennials prefer a half-shady situation on moderately moist soil. They tolerate temperatures only above at least 1°C (USDA zone 10).
