Cypripedium montanum, commonly known as Mountain Lady's Slipper, is a perennial.

Naming

David Douglas already described Cypripedium montanum but the name was validly published by John Lindley in 1840.

Taxonomy

Cypripedium montanum is a species in the genus Cypripedium which contains approximately 66 to 299 species and belongs to the family of the Orchidaceae (Orchid Family). The type species of the genus is Cypripedium calceolus.

Growth

The perennials reach heights of 25 to 70 centimetres.

Cypripedium montanum is deciduous. The simple leaves are alternate. They are ovate, entire and clasping.

Cypripedium montanum produces solitary light-green slipper-shaped flowers from May to June.

Distribution

Cypripedium montanum is native to Alaska, western Canada, the Northwest of the US, the Rocky Mountains and California. It is a protected species according to the Washington Convention.

The perennials prefer a half-shady situation on moist soil. They tolerate temperatures down to -29°C (USDA zone 5).
