Cotoneaster congestus was described in 1869 by John Gilbert Baker. The name is considered as validly published.

Cotoneaster congestus is a species in the genus Cotoneaster which contains 261 species and belongs to the family of the Rosaceae (Rose Family).

The red fruits are pomes. They develop in autumn.
