Coronilla vaginalis was described in 1786 by Jean Baptiste de Monnet de Lamarck. The name is considered as validly published.

Coronilla vaginalis is a species in the genus Coronilla (crownvetch) which contains 20 species and belongs to the family of the Fabaceae (Legume Family).

The subshrubs grow to a height of approximately 0,3 meters.

Coronilla vaginalis is a semi-decidious plant with imparipinnate leaves. The leaves are arranged opposite one another. They are bluish green and obovate with entire margins.

The flowers are pea-shaped and yellow. The plants bloom from May to July. The flowers are arranged in umbels.

The fruits are loments.

Coronilla vaginalis is native to the mountain regions of France, the Apennine Peninsula, Central Europe, eastern Central Europe and the Balkan Peninsula.

Coronilla vaginalis prefers a sunny site and can withstand temperatures down to -23,3º C. It grows best in sandy clay soil that is dry to moderately moist.
