Ophthalmophyllum caroli was already described and the name validly published by Mary Gwendolene Lavis. It was not until 1935, however, that Edward L. Tisch reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Ophthalmophyllum caroli is a species in the genus Ophthalmophyllum which contains 15 species and belongs to the family of the Aizoaceae (Fig-marigold Family).
