Cleretum herrei was already described and the name validly published by Martin Heinrich Gustav Schwantes. It was not until 1987, however, that Per Gerhard Ihlen and Mike Struck reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Cleretum herrei is a species in the genus Cleretum which contains 3 species and belongs to the family of the Aizoaceae (Fig-marigold Family).
