Cleistocactus tupizensis was already described and the name validly published by Friedrich Karl Johann Vaupel. It was not until 1934, however, that Curt Backeberg reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Cleistocactus tupizensis is a species in the genus Cleistocactus which contains 30 species and belongs to the family of the Cactaceae (Cactus Family).
