Cleistocactus hyalacanthus was already described and the name validly published by Karl Moritz Schumann. It was not until 1935, however, that Robert Roland-Gosselin reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Cleistocactus hyalacanthus is a species in the genus Cleistocactus which contains 30 species and belongs to the family of the Cactaceae (Cactus Family).
