Cleistocactus smaragdiflorus was already described and the name validly published by Frédéric Albert Constantin Weber. It was not until 1920, however, that Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Cleistocactus smaragdiflorus is a species in the genus Cleistocactus which contains 30 species and belongs to the family of the Cactaceae (Cactus Family).
