Cleistocactus baumannii ssp. chacoanus was already described and the name validly published by Friedrich Ritter. It was not until 1995, however, that Pierre Josef Braun and Eddie Esteves Pereira reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Cleistocactus baumannii ssp. chacoanus is a subspecies in the genus Cleistocactus which contains 30 species and belongs to the family of the Cactaceae (Cactus Family).
