Claytonia megarhiza var. nivalis was already described and the name validly published by Carl Schurz English. It was not until 1964, however, that Charles Leo Hitchcock reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Claytonia megarhiza var. nivalis is a variety in the genus Claytonia (purslane) which contains 20 species and belongs to the family of the Portulacaceae (Purslane Family).
