Cyphostemma bainesii was already described and the name validly published by Joseph Dalton Hooker. It was not until 1960, however, that Bernard M. Descoings reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Cyphostemma bainesii is a species in the genus Cyphostemma which contains 150 species and belongs to the family of the Vitaceae (Grape Family).
