Chorisia speciosa was described in 1827 by Auguste François César Prouvençal de Saint-Hilaire. The name is considered as validly published.

The Floss Silktree is a species in the genus Chorisia which contains 5 species and belongs to the family of the Bombacaceae (Kapok-tree Family).

The trees grow to a height of approximately 15 meters and have a broadly conical shape.
