Ihlenfeldtia vanzylii was already described and the name validly published by Harriet Margaret Louisa Bolus. It was not until 1992, however, that Heidrun Elsbeth Klara Osterwald Hartmann reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Ihlenfeldtia vanzylii is a species in the genus Ihlenfeldtia which contains 2 species and belongs to the family of the Aizoaceae (Fig-marigold Family).
