Cereus validus was described in 1831 by Adrian Hardy Haworth. The name is considered as validly published.

Cereus validus is a species in the genus Cereus (sweetpotato cactus) which contains 20 species and belongs to the family of the Cactaceae (Cactus Family).

The trees grow to a height of approximately 4 meters.

The flowers are funnel-shaped and purple. The plants bloom in June. The flowers are arranged solitary.

Cereus validus is native to east Bolivia and Argentina. It is a protected species according to the Washington Convention.

Cereus validus prefers a sunny site and can withstand temperatures down to -6,6º C. It grows best in soils that are dry.
