Espostoa lanata was already described and the name validly published by Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Alexander von Humboldt, Aimé Jacques Alexandre Bonpland and Karl Sigismund Kunth. It was not until 1920, however, that Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Espostoa lanata is a species in the genus Espostoa which contains 10 species and belongs to the family of the Cactaceae (Cactus Family).
