Espostoa lanata was already described and the name validly published by Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Alexander von Humboldt, Aimé Jacques Alexandre Bonpland and Karl Sigismund Kunth. It was not until 1920, however, that Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Espostoa lanata is a species in the genus Espostoa which contains 10 species and belongs to the family of the Cactaceae (Cactus Family).

The shrubs grow to a height of approximately 1,5 meters.

The flowers are cup-shaped and white. The plants bloom from June to August. The flowers are arranged solitary.

Espostoa lanata is native to north Peru. It is a protected species according to the Washington Convention.

Espostoa lanata prefers a sunny site and can withstand temperatures down to -6,6º C. It grows best in sandy-gritty soil that is dry.
