Cereus californicus (= Cylindropuntia californica) is a shrub.

Cereus californicus was already described and the name validly published by John Torrey and Asa Gray. It was not until 1840, however, that Frederik Marcus Knuth reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Cereus californicus is a species in the genus Cereus (sweetpotato cactus) which contains 20 species and belongs to the family of the Cactaceae (Cactus Family).
