Corryocactus brachypetalus was already described and the name validly published by Friedrich Karl Johann Vaupel. It was not until 1920, however, that Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Corryocactus brachypetalus is a species in the genus Corryocactus which contains 20 species and belongs to the family of the Cactaceae (Cactus Family).
