Espostoa guentheri was already described and the name validly published by Walter Kupper. It was not until 1959, however, that Franz Buxbaum reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Espostoa guentheri is a species in the genus Espostoa which contains 10 species and belongs to the family of the Cactaceae (Cactus Family).
