Carpobrotus chilensis was already described and the name validly published by Giovanni Ignazio Molina. It was not until 1928, however, that Nicholas Edward Brown reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Carpobrotus chilensis is a species in the genus Carpobrotus which contains 13 species and belongs to the family of the Aizoaceae (Fig-marigold Family).
