Orbea maculata was already described and the name validly published by Nicholas Edward Brown. It was not until 1978, however, that Leslie Charles Leach reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Orbea maculata is a species in the genus Orbea which contains 54 species and belongs to the family of the Apocynaceae (Dogbane Family).
