Orbea lutea ssp. vaga was already described and the name validly published by Nicholas Edward Brown. It was not until 2000, however, that Peter Vincent Bruyns reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Orbea lutea ssp. vaga is a subspecies in the genus Orbea which contains 54 species and belongs to the family of the Apocynaceae (Dogbane Family).
