Orbea melanantha was already described and the name validly published by Friedrich Richard Rudolf Schlechter. It was not until 1978, however, that Peter Vincent Bruyns reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Orbea melanantha is a species in the genus Orbea which contains 54 species and belongs to the family of the Apocynaceae (Dogbane Family).
