Huerniopsis atrosanguinea was already described and the name validly published by Nicholas Edward Brown. It was not until 1937, however, that Alain Campbell White and Boyd Lincoln Sloane reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Huerniopsis atrosanguinea is a species in the genus Huerniopsis which contains 2 species and belongs to the family of the Apocynaceae (Dogbane Family).
