Brunnichia ovata was already described and the name validly published by Thomas Walter. It was not until 1967, however, that Lloyd Herbert Shinners reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Brunnichia ovata is a species in the genus Brunnichia (buckwheat vine) which contains 4 species and belongs to the family of the Polygonaceae (Buckwheat Family).
