Brandegea bigelovii was already described and the name validly published by Sereno Watson. It was not until 1890, however, that Célestin Alfred Cogniaux reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Brandegea bigelovii is the single species in the genus Brandegea (starvine) which belongs to the family of the Cucurbitaceae (Cucumber Family).
