Bougainvillea peruviana was described in 1808 by Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Alexander von Humboldt and Aimé Jacques Alexandre Bonpland. The name is considered as validly published.

Bougainvillea peruviana is a species in the genus Bougainvillea which contains 18 species and belongs to the family of the Nyctaginaceae (Four o'clock Family).
