Bonamia grandiflora was already described and the name validly published by Asa Gray. It was not until 1897, however, that Hans Gottfried Hallier reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Bonamia grandiflora is a species in the genus Bonamia (lady's nightcap) which contains 4 species and belongs to the family of the Convolvulaceae (Morning-glory Family).
